William George Mills won a scholarship to Winchester College but Eva Annie turned it down, even though the Mills family offered to pay the fees. She insisted that he was going to join the R.E like his father. |

Her grave was supposedly marked by a headstone placed by WG Mills - not found when Celia & I visited in 2003.
The position is noted in the Sexton's records on Page 363 as "South of Stedmans (grave), North side of St. Mark's" |

EVA ANNIE MILLS née WILLIAMS
18th May 1873 – 8th Sept. 1915
Eva Annie was the second daughter of William George Williams, a journeyman plumber and Amy Augusta (Newnham) who lived in Clayhall, Alverstoke. She had five younger brothers; William, Charles, Albert Victor, George and Fred.
Nothing is known of her life until 1891 when the Census recorded that she was living at 2, Hughenden Villas, Alverstoke, in the employ of Phoebe M Cox as a Housemaid, together with her elder sister Ada who was the Cook.
On the 2nd March 1897 at the Parish Church, Alverstoke, she married Thomas William Mills, a Lance Corporal in the RE. He had been stationed in the area, and was working on coastal defence with the 35th Submarine Mining Company, laying static mines.
During the months after their marriage the couple moved to Plymouth, Chepstow and Pembroke Dock. The only authenticated photograph of her that exists was taken between 1897 & 1898 in Pembroke Dock.
On the 25th May 1898 their only son, William George Mills, was born at 88, Clayhall.
Sometime afterwards, Thomas, now a Second Corporal, was posted to Port Royal, Jamaica with the 35th Company to help in coastal defence. It is not known whether Eva Annie accompanied him. On the 11th Sept 1900 he returned to England on the Royal Mail Steam Packet Elbe, having passed his probationary period as a Military Mechanist.
His next posting was to Clifford’s Fort, Tynemouth, where he, Eva Annie and William George were recorded in the 1901 Census, living at 59, Coburg Street. During his time there he was promoted again and it is believed that he was the youngest Staff Sergeant in the British Army at the time.
On the 25th May 1901 he died from peritonitis, coinciding with his son’s third birthday; a tragic affair. He was buried with full military honours in Preston Cemetery.
Eva Annie, with William George, returned to Alverstoke. Following in his father’s footsteps, William George Mills joined the Royal Engineers as a bugle boy; worked his way up through the ranks and eventually retired as a Major. He lived for many years in Spring Garden Lane, Gosport, next to the Railway Station and was well known in Gosport sporting circles.
Eva Annie never remarried and died an early death aged 42 years from pulmonary tuberculosis on 8th September 1915. She is buried in St. Mark’s Church Cemetery, Anglesey.

Frederick was working as a groomsman at the Crown Hotel, Emsworth, Hampshire when he died 1896/97. Family myth is that he liked his drink and fell off the horse. He either worked for or followed the famous jockey Frederick Archer, and his son was called Archer after him. Following Frederick's death his wife (with four children) married George Henry Light and they had one daughter, Irene. Emily and James Williams are the witnesses to Fredrick’s wedding in 1886. Emily was James’s wife and also registered Fredrick’s death. |

Possibility exists that Anne was the first wife of William Williams. Census records show a 17 year difference in age between William and Caroline which may also suggest that Caroline wasn't George's mother. |
