Having confirmed that James and Eliza had a daughter Elizabeth born in Ireland in 1867 and that she doesn't appear in the ships list, I first assumed that she died during the voyage but saw on looking at other pages, that all those who embarked were named and noted if they died. |

WRECKED NEEDLES, ISLE OF WIGHT, 28 APRIL 1888:
SMYRNA was run into by the steamer MOTO on 28 April 1888, during a thick fog off the Isle of Wight, when outward bound to Sydney and sank with Captain Taylor and 11 crew. 17 survivors were rescued by the steamship MOTO and landed at Southampton.

Egypt Medal and Khedive's Star |
Egypt Medal 1882-1889 with the bar 'SUAKIN 1885'.
The recipient's number, rank, name and regiment are engraved on the edge. Obverse: The diademed and veiled head of Queen Victoria with the legend, 'VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX'. Reverse: The Sphinx on a pedestal with the word 'EGYPT' above. The exergue is blank . The medal is fitted with a straight swivel suspender and a single rectangular campaign bar. A piece of 32 mm ribbon which has three bright blue and two white stripes of equal width is attached to the suspender.
Khedive's Bronze Star.
Unnamed as issued. Obverse: In the centre is the Sphinx with the three Great Pyramids in the background. Around this is a raised band, on the upper part of which is embossed 'EGYPT' followed by the dates '1884-6'. The lower part of the band is embossed in Arabic 'KHEDIVE OF EGYPT' with the appropriate date. Reverse: The Khedive's monogram 'T.M.' surmounted by a crown within a raised band. The suspender is a small fixed loop attached between the two uppermost rays of the star. A loose ring is attached to the loop joining a straight laureated bar bearing a crescent moon and a small five pointed star. A small piece of 39 mm plain dark blue ribbon is attached to the suspender bar. |
