220 Private Jack Robert McKimm (also listed as McKinn and known to his family as James McKimm) served with A Company, of the New South Wales Infantry Contingent to the Sudan War in 1885. Born in Ireland, he was 22 years old when he enlisted and was employed as a stone mason. One of his sons, Jack Edwin McKimm, served with 3 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, in the First World War and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the AIF in the Second World War, while the other, William James McKimm, served with 2 Battalion AIF in the First. One grandson, Ronald Jack McKimm served with 252 Squadron, RAAF in the Second World War, 77 Squadron in the Korean War and with 37 Squadron RAAF in the Vietnam War; another, Kenneth James McKimm, served in Second World War, while his great great grandson, Elliott McKimm has also served in the Australian Army Reserve.

Age at enlistment 22 years. This would indicate a birth in 1863. However, his death record states he was 69 years old in 1936 which means a birth date of 1867 |

Egypt Medal and Khedive's Star Egypt Medal 1882-1889 with the bar 'SUAKIN 1885'.
The recipient's number, rank, name and regiment are engraved on the edge. Obverse: The diademed and veiled head of Queen Victoria with the legend, 'VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX'. Reverse: The Sphinx on a pedestal with the word 'EGYPT' above. The exergue is blank . The medal is fitted with a straight swivel suspender and a single rectangular campaign bar. A piece of 32 mm ribbon which has three bright blue and two white stripes of equal width is attached to the suspender.
Khedive's Bronze Star.
Unnamed as issued. Obverse: In the centre is the Sphinx with the three Great Pyramids in the background. Around this is a raised band, on the upper part of which is embossed 'EGYPT' followed by the dates '1884-6'. The lower part of the band is embossed in Arabic 'KHEDIVE OF EGYPT' with the appropriate date. Reverse: The Khedive's monogram 'T.M.' surmounted by a crown within a raised band. The suspender is a small fixed loop attached between the two uppermost rays of the star. A loose ring is attached to the loop joining a straight laureated bar bearing a crescent moon and a small five pointed star. A small piece of 39 mm plain dark blue ribbon is attached to the suspender bar. |
