Name |
Redvers Robert Ernest WYNN |
- I had often wondered why an unusual name such as Redvers appeared in the family, and why when searching in indices the name Redvers seems to occur frequently around 1900 when our Redvers was born. It seems that the Commander in Chief in South Africa (Boer War) was General Redvers Buller.
He had had a distinguished Army Career, obtaining a VC early on. However he was not happy being in charge, and would have preferred to be second in command apparently. He made some mistakes but was successful in the Relief of Ladysmith, which happened in February 1900. He was very popular with the soldiers, and also with the general public at the time. He was actually a very good organiser, did much good work in the Army, and probably incurred the wrath of some of the establishment. Hence some of the later criticism. Anyway, it seems to have become fashionable to call children Redvers at that time.
