Pits o' th' Moor, Winton, Barton upon Irwell |
- Pits o' th' Moor" is a now almost-forgotten name for an area of land lying
between Winton and Patricroft. The latter two places are now districts
within the town of Eccles, but back in 1842, they were two separate hamlets
which lay within the Registration Sub-District of Barton-upon-Irwell. The
area in question was part of a triangle of land bounded by the roads known
to-day as Worsley Road, New Lane and Liverpool Road. By the end of the 19th
century, this area was fully developed with terraced housing and two or
three small factories, but in 1842 it was still mostly open farmland. The
first 1848 Ordnance Survey map of the area clearly shows it as labelled
"Pits o' th' Moor". The "pits" in question were almost certainly old marl
pits, which had filled with water, and are shown on the map as ponds.

Wintonian’s Golden Wedding
Mr & Mrs Jabez Hughes of 168 Worsley Road, Winton celebrated their golden wedding yesterday. They were married on 6th November 1869 by the Rev J Chalmers at Barton Wesleyan Chapel from the house in which they are now living
Mrs Hughes is a daughter of the late Matthew Mills and her family has occupied the house for over a century. It formerly had a thatched roof but a few years ago was set on fire by a spark from a motor wagon and was afterwards modernised.
The cottage was one of only about half-a-dozen in Worsley Road at the time Mrs Hughes was born there, 74 years ago, and was then the property of the Bridgwater Trustees and with the others occupied by workmen on the Worsley estates. New Lane was then a rural lane and used chiefly by farmers in Winton, Worsley and Peel Green. It was little more than a cow track and two carts coming in opposite directions had difficulty in passing.
The old couple enjoy good health and Mr Hughes continues to follow his occupation as a joiner.
His eldest son, one of seven children, was killed by accident following his employment at the Patricroft Foundry about a year ago.

- Matthew Mills is an error. James Mills was Emma's father.
