A brief reference in "Northern Rhodesia in the days of the Charter" by M. Gelfand
p 222
"Mrs Freddie Mills was one of the first women to come to the drift with her husband in 1902. She opened a wattle and daub thatched eating house, which proved a blessing to the inhabitants of the settlement, and was greatly respected and loved by all. Later, after Livingstone was surveyed as a township, she and her husband built the Livingstone Hotel -- the first hotel there.
Dr Wilson and Nurse Chapman arrived at the old drift not long after Mrs Mills and opened a nursing home about fifty yards from the river..." | MEHOUSE, Martine Johanna (I1805)

A funeral service for him was held at 'The Hastings Fisherman's Museum', Hastings, East Sussex, on 1st March and he was due to be buried at sea later that day.
However, due to bad weather, his burial did not actually take place until a few days later. The area where he was buried is one of only five permissible burial grounds at sea in the English Channel.
John did serve in the Royal Navy, as did his father (my grandfather),and in the late 1960's he was an Auxiliary Coastguard at Fairlight (keeping watch on the area where he is now buried.
He also kept watch on the 'Firehills' overlooking Rye Bay and Hastings.
In his younger days he helped restore, in part ownership, a large cutter sailing ship called the 'Marigold' in Rye, which has gone on to be a Classic Ship of its day (see www.marigold1892.co.uk )
He also helped a friend and colleague, Jeff Larkby, build his own sailing yacht in Rye harbour from where they sailed across to France on numerous occasions in it.
A true man of the sea!
